Workshop #3

Sara Hughes

Prior to serving in her current role as College and Career Advisor with SUNY Brockport’s Educational Talent Search Program, Sara Hughes has been engaged in professional and community-based work with young people for over 20 years, most recently (2008-2016) in the founding and operation of a local affiliate of The Possibility Project, a highly effective leadership development program for teens and young adults. In the role of Managing Director of The Possibility Project-Rochester, Sara spent over 400 hours per year working directly with youth (20-40 participants per year) during out-of-school time, developing their knowledge-base and competence in performing arts, leadership & communication skills, and community transformation. The Possibility Project has been recognized as a best-practice model in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and has consistently achieved impressive academic outcomes, including 96-99% high school graduation rate and 90-95% college attainment rates by program participants, despite most youth in the program having significant risk factors and educational challenges prior to and during their tenure in The Possibility Project. Sara has conducted numerous workshops, presentations, and group discussions related to this work for audiences from 10 to 300 people over the last 10 years.
